As part of the opening of the new school year in the Northeast Deanery (NED), faculties from all eight Federation schools gathered at St. Ferdinand School on August 11 to meet in their Professional Learning Teams (PLT). Prior to breaking into inter-school teams, Dr. Karen Tichy, Associate Superintendent for Instruction from the Catholic Education Office, spoke about research that affirms the PLT model as the best means of professional development for teachers and other educators.

She demonstrated an example of how PLT work could readily generate ideas on how to make learning activities and materials as effective as possible for all students in a classroom. Teachers discussed the classroom situation Dr. Tichy presented, and offered their ideas on how to solve the problem. Dr. Tichy affirmed the value of the teachers’ ideas and encouraged them to use PLT time to use this process on their own classroom examples.

Dr. Tichy said, “I am so impressed with how much the NED teachers have accomplished in one short year. Last year at this time, most of the teacher team members had never met each other before, but by year’s end they had shared numerous teaching strategies and resources, developed several programs and activities, and built professional relationships that have enhanced Catholic education in the NED .”
