Core Teams Begin Work on Diversity Plans
Dr. Alice Prince met with 30+ people on February 25th at our Diversity & Inclusion Core Team Information and Orientation Meeting.  Each school has formed a team who will work on developing at least 3 SMART Goals for their individual school's Diversity and Inclusion Plans.  Each team received copies of the survey results from teachers, parents and parishioners.  They will also receive the student/youth survey results when complete in March. Stay tuned to your school's newsletter and this Federation e-mail for updates.

St. Louis Police Chief John Hayden is scheduled to visit All Saints Academy at St. Ferdinand on Thursday afternoon. On Friday, third grade students from All Saints Academy at St. Rose will visit their neighbors at St. Catherine Apartments and present their Famous Black American poster projects that they have worked on throughout Black History Month.

As we have announced before, through a Beyond Sunday Grant to the Federation of Catholic Schools we have Dr. Alice Prince, a Diversity & Inclusion Consultant, working with our school this year.  She has been spending time at all of the Catholic schools in North County this fall, and gathering data through classroom visits and surveys of teachers, parents, students and parishioners.

By June 2020, each school will have an individual plan for Cultural Competency, Diversity & Inclusion, guided by the teachings of the Catholic Church and informed by expertise in the field of Education. The purpose of having focus groups is to get more input about what people in our parish and school community believe and value about cultural, religious and socio-economic diversity at our schools. You are invited to participate!

In January, any parent, teacher, staff member, or parishioner who would like to dig a little deeper into this topic by responding to pre-selected, open-ended questions, is invited to participate in a focus group. Dr. Prince will facilitate focus groups at the following times and locations:

  • Saturday, January 11, 9:30-11am at St. Ferdinand Parish (Bilingual Group)

  • Monday, January 13, 6:30-8pm at Our Lady of Guadalupe (Bilingual Group)

  • Thursday, January 16, 6:30-8pm at Christ Light of the Nations School

  • Saturday, January 25, 9:30-11am at St. Rose Philippine Duchesne Parish

Registration is required and each focus group will be limited to 20 participants. Additional dates could be added, if necessary. The groups on January 11 & 13 will have a Spanish language interpreter available. If you would like to participate in one of the focus groups, please sign up no later than Wednesday, January 8th at: Indicate all dates you are available and you will be notified which group you are assigned to.

Thanks to the generous donors to the Roman Catholic Foundation's Beyond Sunday campaign, our Federation of Catholic Schools is embarking on an innovative project this school year:

“Embracing the Gift of Cultural, Racial, Religious and Economic Diversity
in North County Catholic Schools.”

While there are several goals this grant is set to achieve, the first task was to hire someone with the skills and expertise to support our leaders in these efforts.

Alice Prince will be working as the Federation’s Diversity & Inclusion Consultant for the 2019-20 school year.  In this role, she will spend time at each school, getting to know the principal, pastor, DRE/CRE, facult
y, staff and students. She will be leading workshops and providing practical tools and resources for educators on how to best meet the needs of every student enrolled in our Catholic schools in North County. By June 2020, each school will have an individual plan for Cultural Competency, Diversity & Inclusion, guided by the teachings of the Catholic Church and informed by expertise in the field of Education.   Dr. Prince has a Masters Degree and Doctorate in Educational Leadership and is an adjunct faculty member at Maryville University. She and her family are parishioners at St. Nicholas Catholic Parish in the City of St. Louis. Her youngest two children, twin boys (pictured below), attend Cardinal Ritter College Preparatory High School.

When the Federation was originally formed in 2010, embracing diversity was identified as an area of responsibility. In 2018 the Federation formed a subcommittee of pastors and principals, who developed the idea for this collaborative project, which the Roman Catholic Foundation generously funded with the Beyond Sunday Transformational Innovation Grant. Throughout this school year there will be opportunities for involvement by parishioners, teachers, parents, and anyone interested in learning more. If you would like to receive ongoing updates about this project, please contact Cara Koen at 314-537-3174 or e-mail

The Roman Catholic Foundation awards Beyond Sunday grants to archdiocesan and parish Catholic schools and PSR programs in the Archdiocese of St. Louis through a competitive application and review process. To date, $2.3 million has been granted to benefit Catholic education in our local community. For more information, please visit
